ABOUT

I’m Tom and I’m the creator and host of The Proper Mental Podcast.

The idea behind Proper Mental is quite simply to explore all aspects of mental health and mental illness.

And, I hope by doing so, to play my part in normalising these types of conversations.

This isn’t a therapy podcast and it’s not a sad stories podcast.

I’m not here to offer help, advice or tell you what to do because I’m not qualified to do so.

What I am here to do is be relatable. I hope by speaking to as many different people as possible, from all walks of life, that I can show you that underneath all versions of mental health and mental illness is a common theme and that is that we are all human beings before anything else.

Between 2016 and 2020 I faced a struggle with my own mental health. For a very long time I kept that struggle to myself.

Hearing other people talk openly about their own struggles with mental health helped me to realise that I wasn’t alone in feeling the way I did and inspired me to start talking about my own experiences.

Once I opened up, I realised how powerful conversation can be and how much can be gained from shared experience. I wanted to do something to help other people and to break down some of the mental health related stigma that can stop people getting the help they need.

Proper Mental is a resource for mental health and mental illness with many episodes from different perspectives, talking about all aspects of mental health and wellbeing.

If you want to learn about medication, meditation, yoga or anything at all I want to have an episode to help you explore it. If you want to know more about depression, anxiety, learn about BPD or eating disorders I want to have an episode that can help.

I sincerely hope that you get something from this podcast. Maybe you are suffering or have suffered, maybe you have a family member that is struggling or know someone who has faced struggle, whatever your situation I want you to know that you are not alone and that you can be o.k.

Hopefully you can relate to these weekly conversations. I hope they help in some way.

Every episode I’ve recorded has definitely helped me. They have each given me a different perspective on an aspect of mental health, taught me compassion about someone else’s situation, and given me hope that there are amazing people out there doing amazing things and that are helping people when they need it.

If just one person listens to this and feels a little bit better, even just for an hour, then I will consider it a job well done.

Thanks for listening!
